Report: "Canada Day Event"

Updated Jul. 8, 2019
On July 1st, an international cultural event “Canada Day Event” was held at International Community Lounge, Imadegawa Campus. 14 students from University of Winnipeg (UW) who are currently studying at Doshisha University for a summer program and 13 students from Doshisha University joined the event.

July 1st is the national day of Canada. At the event, UW students made a presentation about general topics about Canada; such as history, official languages, food, sports, etc. by using slideshow. They did some quizzes in order to check that participants understand the content correctly and Canada’s souvenirs were given to the students who gave right answers as a prize.

Also, they introduced about the city of Winnipeg which is the capital city of the province of Manitoba, and University of Winnipeg in detail. Unlike famous cities such as Toronto or Vancouver, Winnipeg is not familiar for us Japanese but it has different attractions than large cities. One of the UW students told us that as Manitoba’s slogan “Friendly Manitoba” suggests, people in Manitoba are very friendly, so the city is comfortable to live in for foreign people too.

After the presentation, UW students and Doshisha students interacted with each other while eating Canadian maple cookies which UW students brought from Canada.

Though it was for a short time, the event finished in a cheerful atmosphere. It seems every Doshisha student has strengthened their feelings toward Canada. Students from UW said that they were happy to have a chance to communicate with Doshisha students.
