2019 The University of Winnipeg Summer Program – Imadegawa Campus

Updated Jul. 18, 2019
For 4 weeks starting from June 12th to July 9th, the University of Winnipeg Summer Program was held at Imadegawa Campus. Students had a meaningful and fruitful time in Kyoto, and returned to Canada with many wonderful memories.

The University of Winnipeg (hereafter referred to as UWinnipeg) is located in the City of Winnipeg, which is the capital city of the province of Manitoba in Canada. According to the faculty of UWinnipeg, since the city is situated at a vast plain, there were some students who had never seen mountains before. It seemed those students were surprised to see the scenery of Kyoto, where there are mountains nearby. Believe it or not, sometimes the lowest temperature reaches -40°C in Winnipeg!

In 2019, we welcomed 14 students from UWinnipeg to Imadegawa Campus. They learned about Japanese culture, history, and literature during the program. The faculty gave lectures in the morning, and they deepened their understandings by actually visiting shrines, temples, and many other places around Kyoto in the afternoon which were related to what they learned in the class.

Some Doshisha students interacted with UWinnipeg students proactively by taking them to the campus tour and joining the welcome party. They also taught how to enjoy Kyoto from student’s perspective, and built a great friendship.

At the farewell party held on the last day of the program, students viewed a slide show which is made of photos and videos they took during their stay in Kyoto. Everyone reflected on their memories and some even shed tears by sense of accomplishment of the program. When each student gave a short speech, we were glad to hear that all the students hope to come to Japan again someday. We look forward to seeing you again!
