Doshisha University Merit Scholarships for Self-Funded International Students (For Students enrolled in and after the Academic Year 2025)
Doshisha University offers a variety of scholarships to enable international students to concentrate on their studies free from financial concerns. Recipients of the Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology or MEXT) Scholarship are not allowed to receive any other scholarships/grants during the term of their MEXT scholarship. Therefore, please note that the recipients of MEXT scholarship are not eligible to apply for the scholarships/grants listed below.
Eligible Applicants
- Those who have passed the entrance examination for international students and hold a "Student" resident status.
- Those who have passed the entrance examination for international students, and hold a certain status of residence such as "Permanent Resident", "Long-Term Resident" and "Dependent" .
- Those who are enrolled in Doshisha University, regardless of type of entrance examination and who hold a "Student" resident status (*applicants’ eligibility will be preliminarily screened).
- Those who enrolled in the Institute for the Liberal Arts, the Global MBA Course or the International Science and Technology Course in or after the Academic Year 2014, and are qualified as recipients (*applicants’ eligibility will be preliminarily screened).
Duration of Scholarship
Two years after admission (renewable for up to the standard number of years required for graduation in students who meet certain standards of academic performance). The scholarship category may change at the time of renewal depending on your subsequent academic record.

Graduate Students

- Category S --> approximately 20 to 30% of international students
- Category A --> approximately 30 to 40% of international students
- Category B --> approximately 40% of international students
*The number of recipients varies according to each Graduate School.
*The category is determined by considering such factors as entrance examination results and research plans.
Undergraduate Students

Renewal and Procedures for the Renewal
Graduate Students
(students of doctoral program/Integrated Master's and Doctoral program, or students admitted into the Doshisha Law School with no basic understanding of law at the undergraduate level at their entrance)

Notes
- As a rule, recipients are not able to receive other scholarships for tuition at the same time.
- As a rule, the period of leave of absence is included in the duration of scholarship. However, this shall not apply to a military leave.
- Not applicable to the recipients of scholarships such as "Doshisha University Graduate School Scholarships for Young Doctoral Students/Researchers", "Doshisha University Graduate School of Brain Science Special Scholarships" who are not being allowed by the university to receive other scholarships at the same time.
- In case the recipients do not meet the academic requirements for renewal because they have studied at Waseda University or a university overseas under our university-level student exchange program, the renewal conditions shall be specified separately.
