Report: “Let's make bookmarkers and accessories with "Mizuhiki"” (presented by SIED)

Updated Jun. 13, 2022
On June 6th, “Let's make bookmarkers and accessories with "Mizuhiki"" was held at the International Community Lounge (Kyotanabe Campus).

In Japan, when there are celebrations such as marriages or births, people give money or gifts as a token of their congratulatory feelings. Mizuhiki is a red-and-white or variously colored cord that is wrapped around a gift wrapping paper or a congratulatory gift bag.

This time, we made original bookmarkers using Mizuhiki.
First, we asked participants to choose a Mizuhiki of their favorite color and make a plum flower shape called "Ume-knot". The process of making the "Ume-knot" was complicated, but the participants worked hard and completed a very beautiful ume flower.
Next, the excess parts of the Mizuhiki were twisted to create a lovely colorful bookmarker!
At the end of the event, the participants tried their hand at making Mizuhiki earrings in their spare time! Due to time constraints, some participants were not able to complete the project, but they were able to take the materials home to continue the work at home.
Although the overall work was very detailed, the participants taught each other how to make Mizuhiki, making for a friendly and enjoyable international exchange experience!

SIED will continue to plan international exchange events that everyone can enjoy.
We look forward to your participation!
