On April 16th, SIED hosted “Kyosensu Coloring Workshop,” a welcome event for new international students, at Maisen-do in Gion.
26 students including 17 international students participated in the workshop where they drew freely on kyosensu (traditional Japanese folding fan produced in Kyoto), using paint and brush. Some used sample illustrations prepared by the workshop studio while the others joined the event with their own carefully thought out designs.
During the workshop, the participants actively communicated with one another about their designs, inspiring their artistry.
After the coloring, the SIED staff took the students to Yasaka shrine; there, they learned the history of the shrine and how to worship properly.
One student said “I am excited to have my own fan with my own design. I was able to learn much about Japanese culture through the event.”
We will hold many interesting events throughout the year. Come join us! We look forward to seeing you all!
