On April 22nd (Sat.), SIED hosted “Let’s Make Kyo-gashi!” a welcome event for new international students, at Kanshun-do Higashi-mise. 38 students including 23 international students participated in the event and took part in a Kyo-gashi (Kyoto confectionery) making workshop.
Kyo-gashi has a long history and tradition in Japan; in the old time when Kyoto was the capital of Japan, the confectionery was presented at imperial ceremonies. In the workshop, the participants made three kinds of confectionery that embody the spring season.
Though, for most of the participants, it was their first time making Kyo-gashi, they were able to make beautiful Kyo-gashi by teaching each other and comparing their progress. After the workshop, they tasted what they made while enjoying green tea.
The students gave positive feedback such as "I was impressed by the intricate skills that have been passed down many generations in Kyoto" and “I never imagined that making Kyo-gashi took so much time and skill! From now on, Kyo-gashi will be my go-to sweets for special occasions.”
SIED hosts many interesting events where you can experience not only Japanese cultures but also cultures of different countries. Come join us! We look forward to seeing you all!
