Report: Welcome Event for New International Students “Kyoto Walking Tour - Tracks of the Final Edo Years -” (presented by SIED)

Updated May 23, 2017
On May 14th, 2017, SIED held "Kyoto Walking Tour - Tracks of the Final Edo Years -." In this tour, participants visited the Fushimi neighborhood and learned about the final years of the Shogunate.
The tour started at Terada-ya, a famous hotel of the time, whose frequent guests included a loyalist samurai, Ryoma Sakamoto. The participants were impressed by the old style housing and pieces of the Edo history left inside the house.
After the visit to Terada-ya, they took a tour on a unique boat called “Jikkoku-bune.” Riding the boat that people of the Edo period used, the students enjoyed feeling as if they had travelled back in time and that they could hear the liveliness of the port town Fushimi.
Lastly, at Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, the participants learned about the history of Gekkeikan and about the process of sake brewery. At the museum, they also took part in a sake tasting where they tasted three different kinds of sake. They went home with souvenir from the museum: a set of postcards for underage students and a small bottle of sake for those who are legal to drink.
This event concludes the series of SIED’s welcome events for new international student.
We hope that you all enjoyed learning and experiencing new things in Kyoto, whether you are a new student or not.
SIED plans to host many more events for you to take part in. We look forward to seeing you all in our future events!
