On June 10th (Sat.) SIED hosted “What’s Manga? Let’s Learn about Manga!” and six participants including five international students visited the Kyoto International Manga Museum.
The Kyoto International Manga Museum is very popular tourist spot in Kyoto, and it houses more than 300,000 manga for visitors to enjoy freely. There, the event participants learned about the history of Japanese manga as a culture, secrets of being a manga artist, manga cultures of the world, and much more. During the SIED-customized tour of the museum, we often heard them excitedly telling the others things like “This manga series is so popular in my country” and “I have read this series both in Japanese and in my native tongue!”
After the tour, the students took part in a workshop to create original pins. Some chose the designs done by manga artists and colored them with colored pencils while the others drew their own design.
We hope that through the event, the participants were able to feel a closer connection to the Japanese pop culture. SIED hosts many kinds of events where one can experience cultures -traditional and new- of different countries throughout the year. Join us and let’s broaden our minds together!
