On August 5th (Sat.) and 6th (Sun.), SIED hosted "MIX UP CAMP,” an intercultural exchange camp and we welcomed 22 participants including international students from France, the Netherlands, Colombia, Italy, New Zealand, the United States, Taiwan, and China.
The camp was held on an uninhabited island in Tokushima under the theme of “no border”; the participants interacted with one another without revealing their personal information such as where they are from, what their major is, how old they are during the camp. Through various discussions and activities - riding canoes, setting up tents, and cooking meals outside - , they learned about not only the others but also themselves, recognized differences that separate them, and appreciated similarities that they share beyond languages, nationalities, and any other borders.
In the two days, the participants were able to consider the meanings and significance of “borders” by communicating without any prejudice or assumption. Thanks to the comfortable weather in spite of the approaching Typhoon Noru, the participants and SIED staff members all had wonderful time.
SIED plans to host many fun intercultural events in the fall semester. We look forward to seeing you all then!
Have a great summer vacation!
