Report: “Discover Takarazuka” (presented by SIED)

Updated Dec. 18, 2017
On November 19th (Sun.), SIED held “Discover Takarazuka” with the cooperation of Takarazuka City, and 40 international students joined the event to watch Takarazuka Revue. Takarazuka Revue is like no other theater in the world - they appoint only female actresses. Hence, male characters are, of course, also played by female actresses who perfect the movements and mannerisms that are typically considered masculine. The revue captivates its audience with ever-evolving productions and luxurious revue.
The participants saw two performances by Snow troupe: “A Passage through the Light (the musical)” and “Super Voyager! (the revue)” at the Takarazuka Grand Theater.
“A Passage through the Light” had such dramatic storyline with Maximillian de Robespierre, a French revolutionist as the main character. There were some who teared up watching the tragic love story between the protagonist and his lover.
Following the musical was the revue, “Super Voyager!” As soon as the curtain opened, the audience was dazzled by the breathtaking theatrical design; the theme of the play was the voyage to the sea of hope. There were even moments where the audience was invited to dance with the performers on stage.
Having enjoyed the performance by the theater company of traditions and history, many of the participants stated that they were very much impressed by the actresses’ skills and even commented that “the actress in the male role was so much better than actual man!”
